9 to 5 Jobs: The Modern Slavery Written by Sylvanus Omoniyi

I don’t care who gets hurt with what I’m about to say. If you are still working for someone and they are paying you salary, you are a slave. A modern slave. It doesn’t matter how you view it, that doesn’t change you from being a slave. I have seen a lot of slaves in suits. On the streets of Lagos. In Ibadan. Abuja. Ilorin. Everywhere.

Another man controls when they wake up in the morning, when they eat, when they shit. And when they have sex. Not only that. Another man also determines what they take home at the end of the month. They can curse your father and you will still remain on the job, because you have to take something home. You have no option. Beggars have no choice. You see, most of us will continue to be slaves because we are afraid. You think your employer loves you? No. They don’t. They don’t care about you. You are nothing to them. You have been hired to work for them. They are only interested in their work. You are a slave.

Sylvanus Omoniyi

They give you money at the end of the month. You smile home and spend it. You don’t know that you are a slave, but they know. If you don’t build your dream, someone will hire you to build theirs.
I’m happy I made you angry.
