Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) better referred to as Female Genital Cutting (FGC) and colloquially known as female circumcision is Not a thing of the past. This is the cutting of a female’s external genitalia, or outer sexual organs.
This is a worldwide menace that has terrified our females especially in this part of the world. There are so many reasons given by the perpetrators of this act, ranging from the ridiculous to the plane-outrageous. Chief amongst these reasons being to reduce female sexual promiscuity. Some believe that the clitoris (one of the outer sexual organs and an erectile tissue equivalent to the male manhood) is unattractive and causes infertility if left intact. Some say it’s deadly, that it kills newborn babies if it touches their heads during childbirth.

Others do these cuttings so as to make that area ‘tighter’ hence supposedly making the girl/woman more pleasure-giving to her partner. Note that these cuttings are usually given to young girls largely outside any recognized medical facility as these is almost never a medical indication whatsoever for female cutting. In most settings it is a rite of passage thing where dozens or so girls are lined up on ‘dirty’ grounds with these cutters, these butchers cutting up one girl after the other in quick succession. These girls are not given any pain killers, no analgesics. They’re simply cut and hushed from crying excessively! Most times held on the ground by the butcher’s assistants!

 

Then what do they use to stop the bleeding? Cow dung!!! especially in the northern part of this country. Other cutters simply apply sawdust, mud, sand or such unsterilized materials to the bleeding areas to stop the bleeding!

Types of Female Cutting:
Many types of FGC exist depending on the part of the female sexual organs cut. In most cases the clitoris is targeted for cutting as this is believed by many who indulge in this to be responsible for sexual wantonness.

 
The Ills of Female Cutting:
Chai, these are many. Both immediate and later evils are wrought upon these females. Infections including HIV, hepatitis B and C viruses, many bacterial and such infections can be transmitted to these innocent girls by these butchers via the use of one dirty unsterilized knife on many subjects. The cow dung, sawdust and sand can cause tetanus, this being a very dangerous and immediately life threatening disease condition. The girls can die from so much blood loss soon after the cuttings. And those that survive this can suffer yet worse conditions when they grow up. These including Painful sexual intercourse, some their partners cannot even have penetrative sexual intercourse with them. Some become incapable of experiencing orgasm during sex as a great percentage of females only attain orgasm by clitoral stimulation.

Childbirth can become difficult in these females too, so much so it can even lead to death of the baby during delivery. Some will have the need to give birth by Cesarean Section operations. All these being because the area down there has been made so much ‘tighter’ and smaller than nature wants it.

 
These are so many consequences of female genital cutting. It is still happening behind your backyards, yes people are hiding and doing it. Let’s say No to this evil that besets our females. Save a female child today, save the society at large.
